Why did Forbes rank Chicago the 7th worst US city for drivers?

On Behalf of Hofeld and Schaffner | Feb 4, 2025 | Personal Injury

Chicago drivers face some of the toughest road conditions in the country. A recent Forbes report ranked Chicago as the seventh worst city for drivers among the 47 most populated U.S. cities. The study considered four key factors: traffic congestion, road infrastructure, cost of car ownership, and safety. These challenges increase the likelihood of accidents, making it crucial for drivers to stay alert and informed.

Traffic congestion adds to the risk

Chicago’s high traffic congestion plays a major role in its poor ranking. The city’s rush hour gridlock causes long delays and increases the chance of accidents. With nearly 1,000 traffic signals downtown and frequent stop-and-go conditions, drivers must remain vigilant to avoid collisions.

Poor road infrastructure and maintenance

Road conditions also contribute to dangerous driving. Chicago’s aging infrastructure includes potholes, uneven pavement, and ongoing construction zones. Poorly maintained roads make accidents more likely, especially during winter when ice and snow worsen driving conditions.

High costs of car ownership

Owning a car in Chicago is expensive. The Forbes report factored in costs like gas prices, insurance rates, and vehicle maintenance. Chicago ranks as one of the priciest cities for drivers, and costly repairs due to bad road conditions only add to the burden.

Safety concerns for Chicago drivers

Safety was one of the most critical factors in Forbes’ evaluation. Chicago experiences a high number of fatal crashes, making it one of the more dangerous cities to drive in. The report noted that “the city has a relatively high rate of traffic fatalities compared to other large cities.” Distracted driving, reckless behavior, and pedestrian-related accidents all contribute to this issue.
